Ragging - A Punishable Offence

Prohibition of Ragging Under H.P. Educational Institutions (Prohibition of Ragging) Act, 2009

Ragging is a form of abuse, humiliation, or harassment of new entrants or junior students by the senior students, which causes or is likely to cause physical or psychological harm of ragging and/or abridges their dignity as a citizen. Such disorderly behavior causes social discord and undermines institutional environment. A student, who indulges in ragging shall be liable to face something which such student, will not be willing to do in the ordinary course.

A student who commits the offence of ragging shall be liable with punishment for a term which may exceed to three years of study and also be liable to the fine which may extend to Rs.30,000 or both.

If a student is convicted of an offence involving ragging, he shall be dismissed from the college and such student will not get admission in other college for a period of five years after the date of dismissal from the college.

Anti-Ragging Squad / Monitoring Cell

Purpose: Under the Monitoring Cell with Principal as the Chairman is intended to sensitize students about the menace of ragging which has tarnished the name of many reputed institutions by affecting lives of new entrants.

Key Measures to Ensure Safe Campus:

  1. Putting up of notices for making students aware of the consequences of indulging in any form of ragging.
  2. Displaying of names and phone numbers of members of anti-ragging squad at vital points of the college.
  3. Providing immediate attention by the Principal to any case of ragging and taking immediate steps.
  4. At the time of admission, an undertaking is sought from the parents barring their ward(s) from indulging in ragging and any other illegal activity failing which such discretion/complaint/legal should be initiated by the college administration.
